You do not need a musical vocabulary to know when a sound catches your attention.
Start by listening
Play a few recordings with headphones, then listen again through ordinary speakers. Notice whether you enjoy short, clear phrases or notes that linger. A recording is a starting point; ask for an example of the actual scale and range you are considering.
Keep the first choice simple
A pentatonic scale gives you a smaller set of notes to explore. PentaPan and Discovery each have seven outer notes and one central ding: eight notes in total. PentaPan starts with an A Minor Pentatonic musical palette; confirm the exact note list with the workshop. Discovery adds other published scale options. More notes are not automatically a better first instrument.
Choose the whole experience
Budget for the instrument, its protection and the practical arrangement for collection. Ask what is included, how long your build is expected to take and how to care for the finish.
