Start with the people and the music. Then put the right voices in their hands.
Map the players before the instruments
Tell the workshop how many players you have, their experience, where rehearsals will happen and what instruments you already own. A useful starting plan fits the group and the available space.
Give the ensemble a range of voices
Tenors lead the melody. Double Seconds and Double Tenors bring harmony and countermelody. Guitar pans cover chordal and rhythmic roles; bass instruments give the group its foundation. Pan Inc lists eight instrument types, each with its own range.
Plan beyond the pans
Ask about compatible stands, sticks, protection, rehearsal arrangements and instrument care. Teacher training, arranging and programme-development support are separately quoted. School-package configurations and prices need a current workshop quote.
Leave room for making and learning
Individual steelpan timing is published at approximately 8–12 weeks, with school projects around three months. These are planning indications, not a confirmed delivery date. Agree the final scope, collection and timing in writing.
Bring a clear enquiry
Include the school or ensemble name, player count, current equipment, rehearsal space, musical aims and preferred timing. The workshop can then discuss an appropriate starting ensemble.
