A few thoughtful habits help you look after a handmade instrument.
After playing
Keep the instrument dry, handle it with clean hands and follow the maker’s care instructions for its particular steel and finish. Ask before applying a new oil, wax or cleaning product.
Carrying and storage
Use protection that fits your instrument. A soft bag and a protective shell have different jobs. Avoid leaving the pan where it can fall, take an impact or sit in prolonged damp conditions.
When something changes
If a note changes or the instrument is damaged, describe what happened and send clear images of the top, bottom, rim and affected area to the workshop. Do not attempt to retune it yourself.
Before sending it away
Arrange assessment first. Do not ship the instrument until the workshop has confirmed transport and packing instructions in writing.
