The scale shapes your musical palette. There is no single right choice for every player.
Names are only a starting point
D Kurd, C Aeolian and D Major describe different sets of notes. The letter, layout and register matter as much as the name. Confirm the exact note list with the maker before you order.
Listen to the same idea
When possible, compare a similar musical phrase across instruments. Recording spaces, microphones and playing styles change what you hear. Historical examples should not be mistaken for the exact instrument being offered.
Think about how you play
If you play with other musicians, tell the workshop which instruments and keys you use. If you play for yourself, start with the sound you return to most often.
Give yourself time
Return to a few favourites over several days. The instrument you want to pick up regularly is a better choice than a scale selected only because its name sounds impressive.
